Tremella

TremellaTremella (also known as Tremella fuciformis), edible medicinal mushroom, is commonly known as snow fungus, snow ear, silver ear fungus, and white jelly mushroom. Tremella is popular in traditional medicine in Asia, with a range of health benefits. In conventional medicine, the fruiting body is especially rich in polysaccharides, a kind of complex carbohydrate with many medicinal properties. This polysaccharide is rich in xylose, mannose, glucuronic acid, and other bioactive compounds.1

Tremella Health Benefits

In recent years, there has been rising interest in its health benefits. Thus, Tremella has been the subject of extensive research:

  • Skin Health

Tremella is especially popular due to its benefits for skin health. It can help boost skin health in many ways. It has an excellent hydrating properties. It can help slow down skin aging and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Tremella may also benefit due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and ability to counter skin infections. It can also help protect skin from environmental stressors.1
  • Immune Support

There is rising interest in medicinal mushrooms due to their ability to boost immunity. Studies show that mushrooms are especially good for those living with immunosuppression. These benefits occur due to many reasons, like improved spleen and thymus function, hepatoprotection, and more. However, more importantly, it appears that polysaccharides from Tremella can modulate cytokine, reduce inflammation, and help normalise immune responses. Some of its benefits are also due to altered gene expression and, thus, increased production of specific bioactive compounds in the body. Tremella is also helpful for those with low immunity due to medications or immunosuppressant use.2
  • Brain Health

Tremella is one of the most promising nootropics, which means that it can boost mental abilities, memory, and learning. It seems to increase the brain’s energy production. It is also suitable for reducing brain inflammation and may have a role in reducing dementia risk. Of course, it is vital to use mushrooms over extended time periods to experience these health effects. Nonetheless, studies in animals and laboratories show that Tremella can boost the growth of neurons or brain cells, thus helping prevent and manage brain disorders.3
  • Heart Health

Mushroom polysaccharides are generally good for lowering bad cholesterol, and thus, they can help prevent cardiovascular ailments. Further, it is vital to understand that cardiovascular ailments are inflammatory disorders. Studies show that Tremella may also help due to its ability to lower inflammation.4
  • Adaptogen

Tremella is also good for fighting stress and reducing fatigue. Tremella appears to reduce hypoxia. People living at higher altitudes have traditionally consumed mushrooms like Tremella. Now, new studies confirm these benefits.5
  • Gut & Metabolic Health

Mushrooms like Tremella are an excellent source of dietary fibre. Studies show that regular consumption of Tremella can have a range of health benefits. Tremella promotes gut health and lowers bad cholesterol, atherosclerosis, liver inflammation, and more. It also promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. Hence, Tremella has multiple benefits for gut and metabolic health, making it a good choice for those living with obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart diseases, and more.6

Tremella Side Effects

When medicinal mushrooms are used as supplements, they are unlikely to cause side effects. However, other varieties of whole mushrooms may cause some issues like gastrointestinal issues, allergic reactions, and other minor issues. Tremella is a non-toxic mushroom and does not cause severe health issues except minor gastrointestinal issues.
