Spelt Grass

Spelt GrassSpelt is one of the early species of wheat. Therefore, it is very similar to wheat both genetically and in nutritional properties. However, as an ancient grain, it is less rapidly digested, has a nutty flavour, and has more resistant starch than regular wheat. Further, it appears that spelt is also rich in antioxidants like phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tocopherols, and many others.1 ,2

Spelt Grass is generally consumed as a juice for its various health benefits. It is refreshing and energising and can be consumed in powdered or concentrated form. It is rich in chlorophyll, amino acids, enzymes, and Vitamins. It is especially used as a part of detoxification.3

Despite the widespread use of Spelt Grass and Wheat Grass, there are very few studies regarding their health benefits. Nonetheless, some studies indicate that they might be used to manage various health conditions.

Health Benefits of Spelt Grass

Below are some of the well-known benefits of Spelt Grass:

  • Rich in Antioxidants

Spelt Grass is abundant in vitamins, flavonoids, tocopherols, and other antioxidants. Therefore, it may be especially good for those living with chronic ailments. For example, it may help with joint diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis. It may boost healing processes in those living with diabetes. There are various enzymes that are unique to Spelt Grass, and these may have a role in preventing dementia. It may also have anti-aging properties.2,4

  • Good for Thalassemia

Thalassemia is an incurable disease characterised by malformation of oxygen-carrying red blood cells. However, it is well treated with frequent blood transfusions and the use of chelating agents. Nevertheless, its treatment causes enormous distress to the patients due to the frequent need for blood transfusion. Studies show that Spelt Grass juice or wheatgrass juice may help reduce the need for transfusion by more than 25%.5

  • Detoxification

Some practitioners of modern medicine do not believe in proactive detoxification. Nevertheless, the experience of many people shows that various natural remedies may indeed help in the detoxification process. Sometimes detoxification may help improve health and help remove or reduce the toxic effects of medications. For example, chemotherapy for cancer has severe side effects like bone marrow suppression. It appears that Spelt Grass juice may help lower the severity of these effects through detoxification.6 However, one does not necessarily need to consume Spelt Grass for managing severe toxicities. Many people consume Spelt Grass as a part of daily life, to feel energised and stay healthy.3

  • Chronic Disorders

Apart from containing various nutrients and antioxidants, Spelt Grass is also rich in chlorophyll. Spelt Grass juice may have as much as 70% content of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is like the haemoglobin of plants. Although it is very similar to haemoglobin, it contains magnesium instead of iron. Therefore, researchers believe that such a cocktail of nutrients and chlorophyll have unique health benefits and rejuvenating effects. Therefore, Spelt Grass may help reduce inflammation, help with arthritis, improve digestive health, prevent skin disorders, boost circulatory health, prevent anaemia, improve tissue oxygen supply, and boost wound healing.7

Side Effects of Spelt Grass

If consumed moderately, Spelt Grass would not cause any side effects. It is very similar to wheatgrass. However, quite like wheat, spelt also contains gluten, and therefore those sensitive to gluten must consume Spelt Grass carefully.
